Elephant
dung paper, recycled by elephants at the Lampang Elephant Conservation
Center was turned into a beautiful, safe, creative and an unique
handmade paper by workers at Lampang, Thailand.
These papers are generally imported from Africa and Asia. They are made
largely in Thailand.
Elephant dung paper is 100% bacteria free, 100 % odor free and 100%
recycled. They are papers with a fine texture with a blend of great
selection of native fibers, plants and natural vegetable dyes. The
texture and color of the paper depends on the elephant's diet. No two
sheet is the same. It is 100% eco friendly.
Making of Elephant Dung Paper
- Collect the dung and wash it nicely.
- Boil the dark brown excreta in a vat for 4 hours.
- The bubbling boiling muck is scooped out of the vat and dumped in
a tub of water.
- Add a mild chlorine free bleaching agent to remove most of the
brown color.
- Squeeze the dung to remove excess water and bleaching agent.
- Mix the pulp with water.
- Put the pulp into a cutting machine and add color if desired.
- Squeeze the pulp again and mix with water.
- Pour the squeezed pulp onto a screen in a tub of water.
- Lift out to dry.
- Peel off the sheet from the screen.
- Run though a roller press to make a smooth surface.
- This makes an eco friendly handmade paper.
Elephant dung papers are used for photo albums, notebooks
and note block or cube. They are good for making stationery and
paintings.
