Tie
Dye Handmade Papers are wonderful creation of explicit colors done
by hand. There are various assortments of colors and design, sprayed on
the sheet to display vivid combinations and bright pictures. They
symbolize nature in a very colorful form.
Tie-dye is a technique in which certain areas of sheet are bound or
tied so as to resist color when the material is immersed in a dyebath.
While the craft has been practiced in nearly every part of the world for
hundreds of years, it probably began in ancient Asia and spread to
Africa. This technique is used to add pattern and designs to white
tissue paper, paper towels or other absorbent paper that is thick and
sturdy.
Making of Tie and Dye Paper
- Fold the paper in quarters, triangles or randomly and dip corners
into different colors.
- Paper can be folded in many other ways depending on the desired
pattern and design.
- Dip any corner into one color of dye and when the color spreads
as far as you want, take out the paper and blot the area.
- Press out more water by placing the paper in a clean paper towel.
- After that dip the other corner in other color of dye and let the
new color to seep into the first or you can leave white areas.
- Repeat pressing and blotting after each successive dip.
- When dry unfold the paper and keep it on a newspaper for complete
drying.
- This gives an unique handmade tie and dye paper.

Tips when Dyeing a Paper
- Use rubber gloves to protect hands from staining.
- Add color to required quantity of water for better result. Too
much of water content will give bad results.
- The more water you'll add more lighter the color will be.
- Be careful while handling a wet paper because wet paper can tear
easily.
- Dry the paper well before unfolding it.
- Pressing and blotting of the paper should be done carefully and
gently.
Tie dye handmade paper is used for crafting and for making
envelopes. They are used for covering books, boxes and even metal
containers.
